Hi Craig! Could you help me? For $250.00/$270.00, is it still worth buying a 2020 MacBook Air with an Intel i5? I found one on eBay for $270.00. I will use it all day in college, so I need a good machine with a good battery, and only Apple can provide this (in my opinion). My usage is limited to basic tasks: email, documents, RUclips, Netflix... I plan to keep it for several years, upgrading the software with OCLP if necessary, while a save money to buy a new MacBook with an M-series processor. What do you think? What's your opinion? I would like to get the Air M1, but I live in Brazil, and here it's overpriced and I don't have enough money to buy it. My options are the MacBook Air 2017 or the MacBook Air 2020 with Intel (I don't like the butterfly keyboard, so I won't buy a MacBook with that keyboard).

Is a 10 Gbps Enclosure enough ? as the write speed is only upto 5000 Mbps ?

Lots of useful info! I have an opportunity to buy a iMAC 21.5 in A2116 (2021?) its an estate sale, owner is going into assited living (dementia). They are having the hard drive wiped because because, they don't have the password....Anyway, they haven't taken to be wiped yet, I think I can ask them to check the ports, etc. I had a quick look at it, I couldn't see any cosmetic defects. Any suggestions on ball park price & what I should request the pc place that is wiping the drive? I am just starting to check that model out. I don't want to low ball an offer, but again there is a level of risk. And it would be my first MAC....

I was going to buy the Kingston NVMe back when it was on sale for $30, but then read of complaints of it failing. And I believe it doesn't have DRAM, which people complained about.

I've read of warnings of not going with NVMe drives that don't have DRAM. I've read stories of people using those drives that don't have DRAM and then losing data. Or the drive failing. Though, I plan to just stick with performance drives so I don't have to worry about having one drive for OS and a slower cheaper drive for the 2nd drive spot.

Did that Samsung NVMe problem ever get fixed where they started dying? I've always used Samsung SSD's. But recently got a newer computer to run Windows 11, and it uses NVMe. So when I get a new drive, I'm thinking of just going with Western Digital Black performance. Probably will wait for black Friday deals.

I have a 2012 13" MacBook Pro I use as my experimental Mac I will use when I test new MacOS versions via OCLP. It's not my daily driver, but it's fun to test with.

People do not want a thinner iPad Pro, they wanted a bigger battery. Personally all I need is Wi-Fi 7, Mag-Safe charging, and Face ID. I will wait until the next iPad is released in 2025.

I always was very skeptical when colleagues just said "there is no malware for macos" and userspace protects from everything ... now I have a grasp why there are fewer security problems for mac. Gatekeeper is really powerful and something that just wouldn't be possible on windows.

As an artist, the iPad Pro has replaced my laptop as my main content creation tool. It is also the device I prefer to use to surf the web & watch media on. My 2018 iPad Pro is still going strong, but I will finally upgrade to one of the M4 iPad Pros. I know many laptop users will always complain that the iPad OS is the weak link. But for me, my iPad Pro does everything better than my macbook did. I made the transition to an iPad OS only workflow & haven’t looked back. I think all those complaining about the iPad OS just want a regular laptop with laptop Mac OS. Perhaps some day Apple will offer a macbook with a detachable screen that runs both Mac & iPad OS with a detachable screen. But until then, i think youtubers should stop expecting every new iPad to run Mac OS. I think the iPad Air is a good choice for most iPad users. But professional artists like myself will always go for the Pro iPad.

I'm planning on buying the recommended products here-- the enclosure, and the 2tb WD. If you notice when looking at the WD, it says there are two options: normal and with a heatsink. With the heatsink, would it still fit the enclosure? Also, I'm planning to import a lot of files into this, but I also plan to game off of it (World of Warcraft), and the game is heavy. Would that work nicely or should I be looking at other options such as SanDisk Professional?

Off topic question: With all of this Ai Stable Diffusion Software Hype currently, be it via the DRAW THINGS app from the app store, or be it via the Pinokio installer to be able to use auto1111(and many other stable diffusion apps) , the construction of the CPU in macs is done all wrong for this gen ai stuff, so that now only the ram matters for such ai stable diffusion software. "unless" a long forgotten external graphic cards accessory called eGPU (only runs with old intel macs , not with silicon M1 or M2 ones) can use external graphic cards where then such CPU "power" is used. hence Windows PCs can use still such graphic cards with ease, an infamous one right now is the RTX 4090 graphic card,.... again,....unless,.... i guess ,.....we mac guys dig out an old intel mac form the cellar, and use such external eGPU housings, and purchase external graphic cards. would you as a former top IT guy know about this dilemma ? and if yes,....is there a way to use eGPU with M2 macs in some way ?

What do you think of the Western Digital 2TB WD Green SN350 NVMe Internal SSD?

One of the main reasons iPad users love it, and keep springing for the 'latest' expensive model is - it's a touch screen device. It just feels great to navigate the screen by direct touch and finger contact, and you get very used to tapping on the screen to open apps, move windows, etc. If Apple ever makes MacBooks, Air or Pro, with touch-screens, the iPad is toast, because it would be the best of both worlds. The more robust file-based MacOS with the screen touch-navigation of an iPad. Of course, they probably won't do that anytime soon because the iPad is a big cash cow and they would effectively be destroying an entire income line. Till then, Craig's recommendation of an older iPad combined with a MacBook Air for less than the new iPad alone, is sheer genius. Best of both worlds. Only prob, you now have two devices to schlep around if you want the benefits of both in any given scenario.

Here's another benefit that comes to mind... Obviously this doesn't satisfy offsite backup, but Backblaze would (unlike a NAS sharing a network folder) see this as a regular external hard drive and should back it up, unlimited, to the cloud for you with their backup service. Up to 128 TB for $99/year. That's a big deal. People using a NAS have to either duplicate the setup offsite and set up some wonky remote site to site backup or pay big time for something like B2 or an off-site FTP service like NetDynamics. This lets you hack Backblaze a bit, so to speak.

Amen! I have a base model Mac Mini M2 and have zero issues. Video is not my major task, photo editing the resource demand task. Does everything I need without the high cost, or headaches from Windows!

I can't believe you didn't mention the 2013 Mac Pro. I bought mine super super cheap and upgraded it to a 12core/24thread xeon and 64gb of ram and it all cost less than 300 dollars. if you go with these unsupported Macs then absolutely use OCLP to update to the latest macOS

I live in Thailand and wanted to see how the price compares here. Surprisingly, all these drives are 10% more expensive here with the exception of the Kingston which is the same price for the 1TB but the winner over here is 2TB Kingston for only $86 vs $118 on Amazon. Further discounting may be on its way for that model. It's as fast as I need.
